Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Expected In Ghana Today On Working Visit


Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, pays a working visit in Accra, Ghana today Monday September 7, 2015.
 
The visit by the Nigerian leader is his first visit to the country since winning the March 28 presidential election in Africa’s most populous country.

A statement from the Flagstaff House Communications Bureau Sunday said the Nigerian leader will be received at the Golden Jubilee Lounge of the Kotoka International Airport by President John Dramani Mahama.

The two leaders will then move into bilateral discussions to be followed by a joint statement at the Peduase Lodge in the afternoon.

President Buhari is the first opposition leader to win a presidential election in Nigeria's 55 years of independence.

President Mahama, who was the ECOWAS Chairman at the time of the Nigerian elections, played a significant role in the success of that polls.

Ahead of Nigeria elections, President Mahama met with key stakeholders in the elections to discuss issues arising out of the ECOWAS monitoring group's reports.

He had fruitful meetings with then President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr Buhari, the INEC Chairman and Heads of the Africa Union and Commonwealth Observer groups, a move that went a long way to ensure the elections were held in a free, fair and transparent environment.

President Mahama was also among the first world leaders to congratulate Mr Buhari on his victory in the elections.

The Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari a retired Nigerian Army major general  was born on December 17, 1942.

He was a Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d'état.

He ran for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 general elections.
 
In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 general elections. 

President Buhari won the election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. Marking first in the history in Nigeria of an incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate in a general election. He was sworn in on 29 May 2015.

Buhari has stated that he takes responsibility for whatever happened under his watch during his military rule, saying that he cannot change the past. He has described himself as a "converted democrat".

President Buhari is married to Safinatu (née Yusuf) Buhari.
They had five children together, four girls and one boy.
