Police arrests suspected leader of Kwapong mob attack 
 

The Police in Bono-Ahafo have arrested the suspected leader of a mob that attacked the Police at Kwapong and lynched a suspected murderer, Salifu Kabore.  

Salifu Kabore who was hit by a stray bullet fired by the Police during the chaos was arrested at a health facility at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region and is now on admission at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani under Police guard.  

This was disclosed to the GBC in Sunyani, by the Regional Police Commander, Maxwell Atingane in an interview.  

Recounting what actually happened at Kwapong, DCOP Atingane said at 1 am on the 15th of August, the Police received word that one Traditional Priest, Efo Kwadwo had stabbed a young man to death.   

The Police consequently got him arrested, while they started their investigations.  But according to the Regional Commander, just after an hour after the arrest, when news got round that the stab victim had died a mob stormed the Police Station demanding that the suspect be handed over to them, when the Police resisted this the Mob attacked them, vandalized the Station, and proceeded to beat Efo Kwadwo to death before setting his corpse ablaze.  

When Police reinforcements, were brought in, the Unrest continued with the mob not only attacking the Police but the families of the six Police Officers permanently stationed there.  

The Police and their Families have since been evacuated from the Town although Police are still patrolling the town. 

One, Kwadwo Wiafe is also reported dead after he was hit by a stray bullet during the chaos at the Kwapong Police Station. 

DCOP Atingane said the Police is leaving no stone unturned in bringing members of the mob responsible for the carnage at Kwapong to book.  

He consequently appealed to law abiding citizens of the Town to help the Police apprehend those behind the lynching.  

History seems to be repeating itself as the Police in 1991 had to close down their station in Kwapong when the youth in similar fashion attacked the Police killing on Officer.  

It took appeals from the Chiefs and other Civil Society Groups to get the Police to re-open in the area years later.
