UEW honours four outstanding personalities

 
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) at its Special Fifth Congregation on Friday awarded four personalities, for their contributions towards the growth of the University and humanity.

They were former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Rev. Dr Livingstone K Buama, former Acting Chairman of UEW Governing Council, Alhaji Gibrine Adam, President of Zenith University College,  and Professor Michael Shattock, from the University of London, United Kingdom. The four were awarded with “Honorary Doctorate Degrees.”

Speaking at the congregation, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, pointed out that recipients of honorary doctorate degrees from the University did not earn the degrees through academic achievements.

Rather, he said, they won such awards through generous and altruistic actions or lifetime accomplishments that benefited a community, nation or humanity in general.

Prof Asabere –Ameyaw said the University currently could boast of a student-population of over 40,000 spread across four campuses at six sites and 27 distance education study centres.

For a period of five years, we have consistently graduated not less than 10,000 professionals every year, adding that cumulatively UEW has graduated a total of over 100,000 teachers anther professional since its inception in 1996, he said.

The Vice Chancellor said the University at its inception, inherited structures and facilities from the Seven Diploma Awarding Institutions that birthed it.

He said The University therefore embarked on a massive upgrading of teaching-learning materials and infrastructural development, adding though a lot remained to be done, there are number of modern faculty and office complexes constructed at all the campuses.
             
Former President Kufuor, on behalf of the awardees, thanked the UEW for the  honour done them.

The former President appealed to all public sector employees, especially members of the Ghana Medical Association, that for the ultimate humanitarian consideration for the suffering masses of the people, and with their case so strongly made, to restrain themselves from taking the final step of irreparable damage to the nation.
