N/R: Over 6,000 people benefit from LEAP programme 

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, says more than six thousand people in the Northern and Upper East region have benefited from the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) 1000 programme. 

She disclosed that the Ministry has also added another category to the Leap 1000 programme of providing for the poor, vulnerable and aged in society. 

She said, people with severe disability, pregnant women and children below six months and one year are those eligible to benefit from the new programme. 

Mrs Oye Lithur disclosed this when she visited Nanundo in the Mion district of the Northern region to ensure the enrolment of the 290 people who have qualified to be enrolled unto LEAP 1000. 

She said it is the priority of the Ministry to make sure the beneficiaries have enough money to feed their children in order to have a nutritious meal to prevent stunting or kwashiorkor. 

She promised to visit the communities regularly to provide them with medications to help improve the health of children and pregnant women. 

The LEAP Manager, Dzigbordi Agbekpornu said they selected the Northern and Upper East region due to the statistics from the Ghana Health Service indicating that these regions have the highest malnutrition by which Mion district was selected. 

Mr. Agbekpornu said the programme will therefore; help these communities so that the abnormalities will not develop.
