The oceanographic data indicate a east-west current with a possible speed of 0.2m/s-1, which in my calculation is some  1400 km/yr. So in 1.5 years the distance travelled by a floating object will be 1500km that is not the distance from Australia to Reunion but from Diego Garcia to Reunion.
