Hiroshima: Japan Marks 70th Anniversary Japan has marked the 70th anniversary of the first atomic bomb that was dropped by a US aircraft. A ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, saw thousands of lanterns released on the city's Motoyasu River. Though it killed some 140,000 people, the bombing was said to have brought World War Two to an end. People offered prayers for victims in front of the venue where the incident happened. Many more died of horrific injuries caused by radiation poisoning in the days, weeks and months that followed. BBC
