Government urged to address short supply of lecturers in public universities

The University of Education, Winneba has appealed to government to take a second look at the freeze on recruitment of lecturers by the Universities. 

According to the University, the student/lecturer ratio continues to widen as management cannot replace even retired lecturers let alone embark on official recruitment.  

The Registrar of the University, Dr Yartey Akwaah-Mensah made the appeal at the matriculation of fresh students to pursue sandwich programmes in various academic disciplines at the Kumasi Campus of the University. 

More than two thousand students were matriculated. Dr Akwaah Mensah said accommodation for lecturers also remains a challenge. 

He said the University as a research institution and technical training centre cannot operate effectively with obsolete practical tools handed over about four decades ago. 

Most of the tools have lost their usefulness and therefore cannot cope with modern trends in technology training. 

The University's Registrar also appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority to a matter of urgency construct a footbridge for easy crossing at the entrance of the University to help address frequent knock down of students. 

The Vice Chancellor of the University College of Education, Professor Asabre Ameyaw who administered the matriculation oath asked the students to take advantage of opportunities offered them to broaden their knowledge.

They should use their time profitably in order to go out of the university well informed to take up the challenges ahead. 

They should be disciplined and always abide by the rules and regulations of the University.
