US at Niger's side in fight against extremism Deputy US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, says the country is on the side of Niger in the fight against extremism and Boko Haram. After a meeting with Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou, Mr Blinken said the US will help in the fight by providing training and weapons. He added that since 2011, the US has invested about $ 150 million in equipment to Niger's army and $ 17 million for training. He reiterated that the US has promised an additional $ 5 million for the new multinational force. Mr Blinken called for peace and security to be restored in the cities, adding that jobs must also be created to enable the youth turn away from Boko Haram. He also urged Niger to ensure free, credible and transparent elections to be held next year. Niger is part of a multinational force that has pushed the radical Islamic group from towns in neighbouring Nigeria. NEWS24
