10th July, 2015 Vigilante groups- A failure of Policing in Ghana? is the question the Daily Graphic poses in its editorial. The paper citing election related violence experienced in Akwatia and now Talensi says the country has taken for granted the credentials that she has fought hard to build over the past two decades. It draw attention to the fact that election related violence has always been fuelled by vigilante groups of political parties. Such groups are made of macho men who unleash terror on opponents of preferred candidates. Such behaviour the Graphic says makes nonsense of the freedom of the electorate to exercise their franchise in a free environment. It calls for the ban of all such groups and urges the Ghana Police Service to critically examine identified groups in the Talensi disturbances and also go further to search for other groups that have been put together by either political parties or individuals to cause fear, panic and mayhem during elections. The Ghanaian Times commends the Food and Drugs Authority for imposing a GH¢ 25,000 fine on a Chinese Restaurant, Royal Jade for selling unwholesome food to the public. In the view of the Times, the restaurant should have suffered further sanctions especially as it has been operating since 2012. It says the fine imposed is not deterrent enough to prevent others from doing same as it provides an incentive for perpetrators of such heinous crimes to continue with their diabolical and vicious acts.
