Experts in health call for reforms in WHO to respond adequately to new Ebola cases

Experts in health after a meeting in London have called for urgent, changes to the WHO following an inadequate response to the deadly Ebola outbreak.

This is because the UN Agency does not currently possess the capacity or organisational culture to deliver a full emergency public health response.

The experts recommended that a 100 million dollar contingency fund, suggested by WHO for future emergencies, be fully financed by member states.

They also called for the creation of a separate emergency preparedness and response unit within the WHO saying this is a defining moment for the health of the global community.

They also added that WHO should re-establish its pre-eminence as the guardian of global public health.
