Project to strengthen new born children’s healthcare for four regions Four regions are to benefit from a five-year project aimed at strengthening the new born children's healthcare in every district. The regions are the Eastern, Ashanti, Volta and Brong Ahafo. The project dubbed "Making Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI), is being sponsored by the Project for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) which is a wing of USAID. The Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Charity Sarpong, who stated this said the programme began in July last year and is expected to end in 2018. She said, the MEBCI project is to ensure that at least 90 percent of children born receive adequate new born care to avoid challenges like; asphyxia and breathing problems on the first seven days of birth. The project, Dr. Sarpong noted, will also help to address problems with Millennium Development Goals (MDG) four and five. She said trainings and other programmes will be provided towards the capacity building of health personnel to enhance the success of the MEBCI project. GBC
