Deputy Minister condemns students’ actions Deputy Minister In-charge of Tertiary Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has condemned the heckling of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP’s Vice-Presidential candidate by some students of the Ho Polytechnic and Akatsi training college in the Volta Region. The Deputy Minister made the condemnation on his twitter page. According to the minister “students ought to understand that there is no honor in this heckling business neither does it achieve any result.” “I wish to condemn this conduct and ask no student should engage in this unacceptable misconduct even if under the guise of avenging what happened to my colleagues and I in Kumasi. “He said. “We must be careful not to trigger a nasty vicious cycle which will only mar the long cherished principles of academic freedom which expects our higher institutions of learning to be the epitome of tolerance and most welcoming of all persons and shades of opinion needed for the generation of knowledge.” “Let us also remember that knowledge without discipline will only make us a danger to ourselves and society.” He concluded. Last Friday, some students of the Akatsi College of Education and Ho Polytechnic have disrupted a planned lecture by NPP running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on their campus. Dr Bawumia was scheduled to give a lecture on the impact of the IMF bailout on the Ghanaian economy at the schools as part of his tour of the Volta Region. However, some students started a protest against the lecture even before it could take off. The action comes days after some government officials including, Deputy Education Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa were heckled from addressing some teacher trainees at the Kumasi Wesley College. The incident compelled Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to return to Accra. GBC
