IDB donates to Weija Leprosarium

As part of its social obligations to the Muslim community, the IDB Graduates Association, beneficiaries of scholarships from the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank, IDB has donated food items worth five thousand cedis to inmates of the Weija Leprosarium.

Presenting the items, the Coordinator of the IDB Scholarships programme in Ghana and Chairman of the IDB Education 

Trust - Ghana, Alhaji Rahim Gbadamosi explained that the essence of the scholarship programme is that graduates who have benefited from it should be sensitive to the plight of the poor and marginalized in their own communities and undertake projects that address their challenges.

Receiving the items on behalf of Rev Fr Andrew Campell, the Supervisor of the Leprosarium, George Quansah expressed appreciation and the gratitude of the inmates for the kind gesture of the IDB graduates.

He said the donation has brought hope to the inmates who are prevented from going out to beg for money and it is only when they are well fed that they can remain inside the Leprosarium.

According to Mr Quansah, whatever is received as donation at Weija which is the headquarters of the Lepers Aid Committee is distributed to other Leprosaria at Wa, Kokofu Ho, Nkranchira and Ofankor-Bodwease.

Earlier in his remark, the President of the Association, Amidu Musah said members of the Association were once needy students who were also helped to further their education through scholarship from the Islamic Development Bank and what they have done was to pay back to society especially the underprivileged.

According to Mr Musah, most of their members have been trained as doctors, pharmacists and engineers and apart from such donations they also carry out outreach programmes by supplying drugs to deprived communities, in addition to constructing boreholes and mosques for such communities.

He appealed to the inmates to live together in peace and unity and not to allow religion to divide them with a promise that they would always come back to support them.
