Committee appointed by Interior Minister to investigate Kumasi jail break submits report A Committee appointed by the Minister of the Interior to investigate the causes of the fire outbreak resulting in a near jail break at the Kumasi Central Prisons last month has submitted its report to the Acting Regional Minister, Eric Opoku. The committee, chaired by the Regional Crime Officer, Peter Baba was also tasked to investigate the extent of damage and suggest measures to curtail future occurrence. Members were given up to the 5th of this month but rather this was done three weeks after the deadline. Forty-three witnesses, including serving prison officers, remanded prisoners, and convicts were interviewed. The Acting Regional Minister Eric Opoku thanked the committee for the work done and promised to forward the report to the Minister of the Interior by the close of the week. On the 4th of February, fire broke out at the Kumasi Central Prisons leading to an attempted jail break. A remanded prisoner died in the process, while several other prisoners including prison officers were also injured. A combined team of security officers helped to curtail the riot to save life and property. GBC
