Deputy Regional Minister urges women to file for nominations in DLE


The Deputy Bono-Ahafo Regional Minister, Justice Samuel Adjei, has called on more women to take advantage of the reopening of the nominations for the District Level Elections (DLE) to contest the Elections to ensure more women participate in the decision making process. 

Again, parents especially mothers must prioritize the education of their girl child in order to make it easy for them to take up leadership positions in at the national and grass root levels. 

Mr. Samuel Adjei was emphatic that girl child education would boost the self confidence of women and empower them to take leadership positions. Mr. Adjei made these remarks when Actionaid marked this year’s International Women’s Day in Sunyani. 

Although UN’s international theme for this year’s celebration is “empowering women-empowering humanity” Actionaid chose the theme “Women participation in decision making – make it happen”. 

The Deputy Minister urged women to take advantage of the various educational institutions in the region to get appropriately educated in order to be able to compete with their male counterparts. 

In her welcome address, the Bono-Ahafo Regional Programmes Manager of Actionaid, Christina Amarchey celebrated women in high positions the in the country especially Bono-Ahafo which has two female MPs and three female DCEs. 

She was however quick to say that this number is woefully inadequate. She illustrated this fact saying even though according to the 2010 population census, the female population is 51 percent,only 29 female MPs are in Ghana’s 275 member legislature, representing 10 point five percent. Again, ministerial appointments as well as appointments into MMDCE positions have not made the situation any better. 

Madam Amarchey recommended that in order for all to play their part to make gender equality happen in women representation in decision making, hindrances such as discrimination against women, some traditional beliefs and practices, monetization of electoral campaigns and limited public knowledge about women’s human rights must be addressed. 

She further called on men to encourage and support their wives and female relatives to stand for elections and vote for women as they make good leaders. 

A communiqué calling for support for women to contest District Level Elections and also the need for government to appoint more women to serve in the MMDAs was presented to the Deputy Regional Minister.
