Barbers, hairdressers, others to benefit from solar power project

President Mahama has revealed that Government is working on a proposal to make solar power available to barbers, hairdressers, and other micro entrepreneurs.

Delivering the 2015 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, President Mahama said that government would be rolling out this year, new initiatives on solar energy.

He said 'We are working on a proposal that would make solar power available for micro enterprises operated by barbers, hairdressers, dressmakers and other such micro entrepreneurs whose businesses have been hit by the present power challenges.'

He said a prepaid solar meter scheme that would enable residents of remote off-grid communities own and enjoy solar lighting would be launched as a private sector activity facilitated by government.

The solar power project which will also be available for residential consumers is estimated to save the country about 200MW of power daily, the President added.

Other sources of energy to be pursued are wind, tidal wave and biomass projects.

The President reminded Ghanaians to conserve power as government takes measures to end the energy crisis.

“While we work on the generation side we must also look at the issue of power conservation,” the President urged.
