CPP Protest To Demand Immediate Return Of Party Assets Confiscated After 1966 Coup

Members of the Convention People’s Party on Tuesday hit the streets to protest against the confiscation of Party assets after the 1966 coup.

Just a handful of supporters responded to the CPP's call for picketing at the Obra spot in Accra to demand social justice and immediate return of party assets confiscated after the 1966 coup. 

Dr Kwame Nkrumah was seen as practicing a one party system and all assets of the party were seen as belonging to the state. 

But since the advent of the fourth republic and with the rebirth of the CPP, it has demanded all governments to return to it all its seized assets but to no avail. 

Among a host of the confiscated assets are the party's offices in all regional capitals and Asamankese as well as the Ministry of Information building which used to be the party's headquarters. 

Tuesday’s picketing was yet another action to mount pressure on the government to release the assets. 

Leader of the police team on the ground Chief Supt Aboagye Sarpong said the police are on top of the situation and hoped nothing unpleasant would happen. 

When Radio Ghana got to the Ministry of Information which is the main target of the CPP activists, none of them was around the building. 

There were however police personnel detailed to provide security to the building and its occupants. 

Chief Supt Aboagye explained that the police are not taking chances. 

Meanwhile, the police have prevented the picketers from going on a procession around the Kwame Nkrumah circle. 

According to the police that did not form part of the agreement reached between the two sides.
