Five Nigerians busted

Five Nigerians suspected to be behind the use of text messages to swindle about seven thousand MTN subscribers have been arrested by the police.  

The suspects allegedly circulated text messages that falsely indicated the receiver had emerged as winner of a promotion run by the network provider.  

According to the Police a total of ten thousand six hundred subscribers reported receiving such messages in 2014. 

This year alone, one thousand, four hundred of such cases have been recorded.  

The police say to redeem their prizes the victims are to buy recharge cards and send the pin codes to the sender of the message as a way of processing their rewards.  

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCOP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno who confirmed this at a media briefing in Accra therefore cautioned the public to be mindful of such activities.
