NCCE survey reveals women are not interested in local elections in Ghana 


A survey conducted by the National Commission for Civic Education NCCE in Tamale, has revealed that, 79 percent of women in the area, have no interest in local level elections. 

The survey conducted in the Tamale Metropolis and the Sagnarigu District also revealed that, only 0.04 percent of aspirants in the upcoming district assembly elections in the Tamale Metropolis are women, whilst, 0.07 percent of aspirants in the Sagnarigu district are women. 

Seventy percent of respondents however, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the few women elected to the assembly. 

The NCCE Regional Director, Abdul Razack Saani said the high illiteracy rate among women and the lack of support from husbands have been given as reasons for the lack of interest in local elections. 

Other reasons he gave are the lack of interest in local elections include the lack of financial support, intimidation and inferiority complex among women. 

The Northern Regional Director of expressed the hope that, the findings will guide stakeholders in their quest to improve female participation local elections.
