MP advocates creation of more childhood cancer treatment centres in Ghana 


The MP for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Mrs. Georgina Nkrumah Aboah is advocating
the creation of more childhood cancer treatment centres in the country to
deal with this disease. 

She says the disease is worrying even among adults so when it affects children, there is the need to have easy access to healthcare. 

She said the country currently has only two centres for treating children affected with cancer and this is not the best. 

Mrs. Aboah made the appeal in a statement in Parliament to mark international childhood cancer day. Another intervention she suggested to help manage the disease is the establishment of a registry to track pediatric cancer.

Radio Ghana's Correspondents Dominic Hlordzi and Augustus Acquaye report that althogh there are no comprehensive national statistics on childhood cancer, it is estimated that globally, one thousand children below 15 Years are affected by cancer annually. 

The MP for Asikuma - Odoben - Brakwa, Georgina Nkrumah Aboah said sensitition about the disease seem to be virtually non existent thereby making people report cases at a therminal stage.

The mp for Agotime-Ziope, Juliana Azumah-Mensah made an appeal for the treatment of childhood cancer to be roped unto the NHIS
treatment list.

The member for Dormaa central, Kweku Agyeman-Manu said the support could be extended to parents as well.

The statement acknowledged the work of NGO's who are supporting to address the disease. It particularly mentioned the Dr. Michuell
memorial foundation.
