Physicians appeal to Health Minister & Select Health Committee to respond to its request 


The Physician Assistance Association of Ghana has appealed to the Minister of Health, and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to respond to its request that members be permitted to open their health facilities when on pension. 

This according to the association will enable them contribute their quota to meet the health needs of Ghanaians especially in the remote areas of Ghana where there are no established government health facilities. 

The association is also calling on government to come out with job description of members to replace the old one prepared 50 year ago when most of the physician assistants were not degree holders.  

The concerns were raised after the end of the Association’s Council Meeting in Kumasi to deliberate on a number of issues that affect healthcare delivery in Ghana. 

The other issue raised was the delay in paying the National Health Insurance Capitation to health facilities in Ghana. Some of the facilities have been in areas for the past six months.
 
The National President of the Association Chief Imoro Andam on the acquisition to acquire license to operate their own facilities wondered why the request by members to be allowed to register their own facilities is not receiving any positive response. 

He noted that some of the physicians are capable of working on their own without any personal supervision and for government to deny such officers a license to
operate on their own without rooting it through a medical doctor is most unfortunate.
 
Chief Imoro Andam who is also in-charge of the Abuakwa Health Center near Kumasi said his application to open a clinic at the hard to reach area in the Northern Region has been there for years without any positive response. 

The General Secretary of the Association  Norgah Osman said the role of the physicians in healthcare delivery in Ghana cannot be underestimated as members are found in their numbers at any health facility in Ghana both urban and rural areas. 

Mr. Osman commanded the Director General of the Ghana Health Service for his personal support for the course of the Association and hoped he would use his influence to ensure that the demands made to government are met.
