Ghana ranked 22nd in World Press Freedom Index Ghana has moved up five places to secure the 22nd position out of 180 countries globally, and the second behind Namibia in Africa, in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index ranking. The data was compiled based on a range of criteria that include media pluralism and independence, respect for the safety and freedom of journalists, and the legislative, institutional and infrastructural environment in which the media operate. According to the annual evaluation report released by the watchdog group, Reporters Without Borders, top on the list are three Scandinavian countries: Finland, which has been in first place for five years in succession, followed by Norway and Denmark. Worse performers at the other end of the scale are Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea. The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Suleiman Braimah, says it is delightful that Ghana ranks high in terms of media freedom, adding that there is the need to do more to maintain the position if not to improve upon the current ranking.
