MP's call for more education to end Female Genital Mutilation


Members of Parliament have increased the call for more education to end Female Genital Mutilation, FGM.
 
The calls came after A Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs.Dela Sowah made a statement to mark World Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, FGM.
 
She said Ghana is among countries that have recorded a positive decline in the practice. She said despite this acknowledgement, the country is not resting till FGM is totally done away with. 

Radio Ghana’s Parliamentary Correspondents, Dominic Hlordzi and Augustus Acquaye report that the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs. Dela Sowah who is also the MP for Kpando said the practice makes women all the more vulnerable thus the reason for them to be shielded from the canker.

The MP for Manso-Nkwanta, Grace Addo said eradicating FGM will be more fruitful in the country if men get involved.

To the former Health Minister and MP for Wa West, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, what needs more attention is enforcement of the law. He said since there is a law which criminalizes FGM, it must be duly enforced to halt it.

The MP for Tano South, Dr. Hanna Bisiw saw the practice of FGM as a deprivation of a woman’s right.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul said Ghana must eradicate the menace aggressively to lead the way on the continent.

It is estimated that three million girls are at the risk of the practice in Africa every year.
