USAID commends Dr Vanderpuije for constructing schools Mr Andy Karas, Deputy Mission Director of the United State Agency for International Development (USAID), has commended Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, for his bold initiative of constructing Millennium City schools in the metropolis. He also lauded the excellent collaboration between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service in ensuring that the construction of the millennium schools adhered to approved designs and specification. Mr Karas made the commendation at a ground breaking ceremony to start the construction of another Millennium City School at Korle Gonno in the Ablekuma South District on Tuesday. He said the Korle Gonno Community was highly prone to population increases with demonstrated need for increased classroom space to accommodate the rising student population. Mr Karas said under the USAID Partnership for Education Project, Korle Gonno was going to benefit from its 1.5 million dollar investment to construct two school complexes in co-operation with the AMA to accommodate about 1,500 school children. “You will begin to hear more about these exciting projects as we embark on with the Ministry of Education and its key institutions to turn the tide of low learning outcomes by focusing on improving the ability to read among children in basic schools,” he said. Mr Karas urged the Government and the AMA to continue to engage strongly with the private sector and other development partners in building on the successes chalked. Dr Vanderpuije said it was the commitment of the AMA to promote quality education under the Better Ghana Agenda and added: “we would not stop until we have brought development to the people.” He expressed gratitude to the USAID for its wonderful support to the people of Accra, adding that: “as future leaders I will ensure that the children took their studies seriously towards achieving academic excellence because that is the surest way through which they can make an impact in life.” He announced that a new Millennium City School would commence at Korle Gonno Roman Catholic soon, saying: “the school projects would be extended to the senior high schools in Accra.” Mrs Angela Tina Mensah, Accra Metro Director of Education, asked teachers to provide quality teaching and learning to befit the millennium schools.
