Communities urged to motivate women to contest assembly elections

Mr Alex Sackey, the Eastern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has said there was no motivation for women to participate in local government elections.

He appealed to women to show more interest in issues around them and take interest in local governance and the district assembly election.

Mr Sackey was speaking at a training workshop for aspiring women assembly members and identifiable women’s groups to understand the functions of the district assemblies and the roles of assembly members and unit committees.

The program is intended to build the capacity of the women aspirants and help them boost their confidence ahead of the district assembly elections.

Mr William Ankuvie, the Regional Programme Officer of NCCE, said assembly members were the mediators between the assembly and the community and were expected to communicate government policies  and initiatives to the people and note the concerns of  the  people and present it to the assembly

He urged people to attach more seriousness to the district assembly elections to elect competent people who could work hard for the development of their community.

Mr Asirifi Young, District Electoral Officer of Ayensuano, said aspiring assembly member were not expected to do public campaign because the Electoral Commission, by law, would have to create platforms for all the candidates to address the electorate. 
He said candidates would do door to door campaign.
