Ministry, Assemblies and Partner Officials tour propose Landfill Site
 

Officials of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Netherlands Embassy, the Accra Metropolitan, and the Ga South Municipal Assemblies, have  visited a proposed Engineer Landfill Site at Horbor in the Ga South Municipality.

The officials included Mr Emmanuel Kwadjo Agyekum and Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye, both Deputy Ministers of Local Government, Mr Fred Smith, First Secretary of the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana, Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpuiye, Mayor of Accra, and Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, Ga South Municipal Chief Executive

The visit was to ascertain first-hand information of the 500 hectare land,  and to also access the environmental impact against the surrounding communities around the site.

The engineer landfill will be partly funded by the Netherlands Government and the Government of Ghana, and known as the Ghana-Netherlands Waste Project.

The site will largely absorb  waste generated in Accra and its surrounding communities which will be segregated for value addition, such recycling and biogas production.   

Addressing the media after the tour, Mr Agyekum said the ministry and the two Assemblies were yet to finalize the acquisition of the land and that a feasibility study on the land had already being done,  awaiting the environmental impact assessment report.

He said the two Assemblies are tasked to finalize the land acquisition process by January 15 this year, to fulfill the commitment of  Government, to the project which the Netherlands Government was waiting for.

Mr Smith said the Netherlands Government has its project consultants from the Netherlands who advise them on the project and its policy dimensions.

He disclosed that the Dutch Government was providing funds and Technical Assistance to make the project successful, adding, “In the Netherlands, we recycle water and we turn waste to money.”   

The team also visited the REXEL Company, a private company at Kofi Kwei, also in the Ga South Municipality which is also building a management facility system which will be turning waste into energy.

The facility according to the Manager of the Company will be ready by the second quarter of this year to receive waste which will be supplied by the Ga South and Ga Central Assemblies.
