Significance of 24 December: Heralding The Passion Of The Christ The celebration of the birth and life of Christ is no doubt one of the most unique events on the Christian calendar. It is against this background that today, the 24 December is an important day, not only for Christians but the world in general. 24 December was originally a Jewish public holiday and it was on this day that the Romans conducted the first world census. The age 24 is also documented in most cultures as the age innocence is lost. It is also believed that at age 24, a man attains the full status of manhood. 24th December is usually an occasion for several engagements because it ushers in the commemorative day of Christmas and also because most people are likely to be on Christmas break. For some, the day before an event is as significant as the day itself. To some also, it is during this time that finishing touches are made to preparations. To others, it is time to give rest to the body since the next day will be busy. In Ghana, most people especially the youth keep vigil and have fun on the 24th of December. Years gone by, as children, we used to weave Palm branches and construct huts with them, decorate them with balloons of various colours and play all kinds of games. On this day, one is likely to see pockets of people gathered at one place or another, some dressed in various attire, either watching movies, attending live concerts, sitting and chatting over burning tyres and enjoying the unfolding events of the coming special day. The kitchen is usually hot on Christmas eve with all kinds of preparation. It can be said that this is not a good time for chickens, goats, sheep and akrantie (Bush meat)! As is the usual manner of most Ghanaians, last days are very busy. On the 24th of December, commercial activities are usually at their peak, with most shops and markets choked with shoppers. Even though today Christmas can be said to have become largely commercialized, the significance of the season is still not lost on most people. To some, it is a great time to get close to God and appreciate Him for His grace and protection throughout the year. Many use the spiritual significance of Christmas to take stock of their lives. Others use the season to pray and fast. This is evidenced by the pilgrimage of many people to prayer camps to seek the face of God for direction in the New Year. The 24th of December is also the day most Ghanaians travel to visit their families and loved ones. Bus terminals and transport stations are crowded with travellers. Furthermore during the Christmas season, campaigns for greater discipline on our roads are stepped up. The public especially drivers are cautioned to be patient on the roads. Also public awareness is created about the activities of confidence tricksters who take advantage of the occasion and defraud people. As the nation prepares for the celebration of Christ's birth, we must as a people learn one outstanding virtue from the life experience of Jesus Christ - that life is not about where you come from or the family you are placed in, and it is certainly not about the political party or religion you affiliate with but, the purpose of God on earth, which you must strive to fulfil. We must be reminded of the humble beginning of Jesus and how great He became. We should therefore not determine one's end by their seeming humble beginnings.
