Police impound 28 vehicles in Eastern Region

Twenty-eight private and commercial vehicles have been impounded by the Eastern Regional Police MTTD in an exercise to rid the streets of the New Juaben Municipality of drivers without requisite driving licences and documents as well as vehicles without appropriate road worthy certificates.

This was disclosed by the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, in an interview with a Radio Ghana reporter in Koforidua.

The exercise, which began on Monday, January 5, was led by the new Regional Police MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent Ebenezer Larbi, and arrested mostly commercial vehicles for various offences including drivers without valid driving licences, and vehicles without road worthy certificates. 

ASP Nketia-Yeboah explained that the exercise follows the arrival of the new Regional Police MTTD Commander, who discovered that most road accident cases recorded in the Region over the past year were due to drivers without requisite driving documents and vehicles without road worthiness.

The Police PRO added that some commercial drivers are not qualified for the vehicles they drive, and some drive with expired licences.

He stated that the drivers of the impounded vehicles will be processed for court after a screening exercise. 

ASP Nketia-Yeboah used the opportunity to urge drivers whose licences have expired to renew them as soon as possible, and endeavour to follow the Road Safety Regulation Law, LI 2180, as Section 158 of the Law empowers any police officer from the rank of Inspector and above to impound any vehicle they have good reason to believe is not road worthy, and to compel their owners to fix them to acceptable standards.

He also reminded drivers and vehicle owners of the new electronic road worthy certificates and its impending enforcement starting from the beginning of the Second Quarter of 2015.
