Gov't Launches Welfare Card For The Elderly


The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched the EBAN Elderly Welfare Card to provide the aged easy access to social amenities.

The EBAN Elderly Welfare Card will provide quick services to persons 65 years and above at hospitals, banks and other public places without they (elderly) joining queues for those services.

It will also enable them gain easy access to transportation (bus) services all over the country at a discount of 50%.

At the launch yesterday at Opera Square in Accra, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, explained that the EBAN, which means fence in Akan, is the name of an Adinkran-symbol, symbolizing safety, security and love.

She added that 1,200 of the cards had already been issued to the elderly in Greater Accra.
The Country Representative of the UNFPA, Dr Babatunde Ahonsi, said the Fund was privileged to co-work with the MGCSP to protect the rights of the aged in society.
