Catholic Bishops advise politicians to avoid corruption


The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Reverend Joseph Osei Bonsu says, in spite of the public outcry about the devastating effects of corruption in society; the canker together with bribery is now permeating virtually every facet of the Ghanaian social life.

In his New Year message, Most Rev Osei Bonsu, who is also the Bishop of the Konongo-Mampong Diocese of the Catholic Church mentioned politicians, the judiciary, security agencies, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, educational institutions, the work place, market centres, the media, ministers of God and traditional leaders as the corrupt members and institutions.

He says in spite of the strong institution to deal with the problem, people still commit corruption with impunity because there is a lack of integrity and honesty on the part of managers of the institutions and individuals.

Most Rev Osei Bonsu advised especially politicians to do their work conscientiously and avoid bribery, corruption and misappropriation of funds.

He also asked Ghanaians, whether Christians, Muslims, traditionalists or practitioners of the other faiths to strive to live by the tenets of their religions, adding that religion should rather positively transform the larger society.
