Research identifies household pollution as number one  cause of  deaths in Ghana


Research has shown that household air pollution is one of the leading causes of mobility and deaths in Africa and the number one in Ghana. Air pollution happens during the burning of Biomass fuel that is the use of firewood, charcoal and cow dung.

The Head of Research at the Kintampo Health Research Centre, Dr Kwaku Poku Asante, who disclosed this to Radio Ghana said pollution leads to hypertension, low birth rate and respiratory illness.

He explained that the burning of these substances to cook produces chemicals which affect the health of users. 

Dr Asante said currently a team of researchers are undertaking a study using the Ghana Randomised Air Pollution and Health Study, GRAPHS.

About one thousand four hundred women are being used in the study.
