Atti-Morkwa DCE jailed for contempt of court

DCE for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Bossman Osei-Hyiamang, has been jailed 14 days by a Cape Coast High court for contempt of court. 

The DCE was found culpable of contempt for bringing its reputation into disrepute. 

The court on August 21, this year, ordered a bailiff to effect service on Hyiamang in connection with a case involving the demolition of the Twifo-Praso market, which the Assembly was to undertake but was challenged in court by one Alhassan Suleiman. 

The court learnt that the bailiff went to the DCE to serve him the court summon but met his absence and was informed that Hyiamang was at the market.

According to the bailiff, he approached the DCE for the second time with the summons but he refused to collect it.

The bailiff was therefore compelled to place the document besides him as the law demands and this infuriated Hyiamang who rained insults on him.

Counsel for Hyiamang, Samuel Adu Yeboah, pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy since his client had regretted his action.

The Judge Nana Adwoa Coleman said she factored the plea of the counsel and the remorse shown by the respondent into consideration in the judgement, explaining that if she had considered the perjury aspect of the case, the respondent would have attracted a higher punishment.

In her ruling, she said whenever a person is appointed to serve the nation; he or she must learn to respect the rule of law in the interest of the state.

Mrs Coleman said the punishment should serve as a deterrent to public officers.
