President Mahama leaves Accra Tonight for 69th UN General Assembly meeting in New York


President John Dramani Mahama, accompanied by his wife, Lordina Mahama, and a number of Ministers and senior officials left Accra this evening for the United States of America, to attend the 69th Session of UN General Assembly in New York.  

President Mahama is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday, 25th  of this month during the General Debate, which has the theme: “Delivering on and implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.”  The President is also  expected to speak in relation to this theme in the context of Ghana and also tout Ghana’s favourable standing in the world as a nation with one of the highest returns on investment.  

As Chair of ECOWAS  and drawing on his visit early this week to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea  President Mahama will highlight the need for concerted international support for these nations as they fight against the Ebola  outbreak that has claimed lives and severely affected the people. 

President Mahama will participate in some other major events, including a UN Climate Summit on Tuesday, the 23rd of this month, organised by UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon and aimed at galvanising climate change action. 

Before leaving the USA, President Mahama will be a Special Guest and keynote speaker at Harvard University on Friday 26th September, with a lecture under the theme “Economic Governance in Unchartered Waters.” 

He will also deliver a second lecture in Brandeis University on Saturday, 27th September, under the theme, “The promise of Africa.”  

From the USA, President Mahama will travel to Dubai to attend an Africa Global Business Forum on Wednesday the 1st of October, before returning to home.
