Two soldiers jailed for Assault 

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced two military men to two years in prison for assault.

Dickson Reuben and Mark Gwira Forkes, were arraigned before the court on charges of assault, conspiracy and three counts of robbery.

The two pleaded guilty to assault but denied the conspiracy and robbery charges.

The Court presided over by Francis Obiri, convicted the soldiers on their own plea.

They are to serve two years each while the court begins their trial for the other charges on the 29th of this month.

A third soldier said to be involved in the crime, Mohammed Iddrisu is on the run.

According to the facts of the case, the soldiers were reported to the Kwabenya District Police Command on August 4 this year for arresting, handcuffing and beating a young man Mohammed Abdul Fatau in a taxi at Dome Pillar 2.

The Police who were acting on information, provided by an informant met the soldiers and an angry mob who had besieged the Haatso Westland Police Post, where the soldiers claim they had gone to hand over Fatau.

Subsequently Fatau and the soldiers were sent to the Kwabenya District Police Command.

The Police during interrogation established that the Military men attacked and assaulted Fatau without any apparent cause.

Three other complainants later lodged complaints against the soldiers.

A radio producer, Daniel Ako-Nai who identified the soldiers to the Police, said he was attacked and robbed of 200 Ghana cedis and other personal effects including his wrist watch worth 500 Ghana cedis.

Francis Osei a driver and Eugene Appiah Mensah a student who identified the military men at a parade, were robbed of two thousand 200 Euros and one thousand Ghana cedis in a separate encounter with the solders.

The Police say efforts are being made to apprehend the third solder who is on the run.
