AMA To Prosecute Food Vendors Who Sell In The Open Accra Metropolitan Assembly says it is stepping up efforts to ensure that the Assembly's by-laws on sanitation are enforced to prevent the spread of communicable diseases in the Metropolis. To this end, all food vendors who sell in the open will be prosecuted if they fail to strictly comply with the guidelines of the assembly. The Head of Public Health Department of the AMA, Sampson Anim-Boateng, stated this to Radio Ghana in Accra. Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service, GHS, has asked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to enforce by-laws on food sold on the streets across the country. The Director General, Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira said this will ensure that food vendors conform to the regulations governing their business. It will also help stop the spread of cholera. The disease has so far claimed more than 80 lives with more than ten thousand cases recorded. On the increase in plastic and polythene bags, Dr Appiah-Denkyira said the indiscriminate disposal of these bags has contributed to the insanitary conditions facing the nation. He therefore suggested that recycling of plastic and polythene bags be intensified to avoid the re-occurrence of these problems. GBC
