Markets In Accra To Suspend Activities On Thursday As War On Insanitary Practices Intensifies

All markets in the Greater Accra Region are expected to suspend daily activities on Thursday till 12 noon. 

The leader of the Millennium Market at Agbogbloshie, Mabel Adadevor, told Radio Ghana that all market women will assist A.M.A officials to desilt drains and keep their environment clean. 

This is to complement government's effort to prevent an intensification of the cholera outbreak. 

She said anyone who refuses to show up on Thursday will be sanctioned. 

This came to light when Radio Ghana visited some markets in the Greater Accra Region. 

Following the clearing of garbage in Accra, the Municipal Assemblies of Abokobi, Adentan and Madina have embarked on desilting of choked drains, clearing of refuse and education on good sanitation practices to prevent cholera in the Municipalities. 

Radio Ghana spoke to the three MCE's to find out how far their municipalities have gone with sanitation. 

According to the Abokobi Municipal Chief Executive, John Quao Sackey, the Assembly is on top of issues on sanitation. 

The Adentan Municipal Chief Executive, Benjamin Angenu says the Assembly is mapping out areas where there are no dustbins, for supplies to be made to residents. 

He said two boreholes would soon be provided in the community and three other mechanised water systems rehabilitated to improve sanitation. 

In Madina, the Chief Executive Franklin Anku asked residents to co- operate with the Assembly to rid Madina of filth.
