UN Says 20% Youth Experience Mental Health Condition A UN report says about 20 per cent of the world’s young people experience mental health condition each year. The risk it says are especially great as they transcend from childhood to adulthood. The report says stigma and shame normally compounds the problem and this prevents the youth from seeking the support they need. As the world observes International Youth Day today, the UN says it is determined to lift the veil that keeps young people locked in a chamber of isolation and silence. It says the barriers can be overwhelming, particularly in countries where the issue of mental health is ignored and there is lack of investment in mental health services. The report says persons with mental health conditions are marginalized not only from having a role in the design and implementation of development policies and programmes but even from basic care. This leaves them more vulnerable to poverty, violence and social exclusion. The report reminds all stakeholders that with understanding and assistance these young people can flourish and make valuable contributions to the future of their countries. Source: REL
