South African Government Requested to Declare Business Interests 

The South African government has issued a directive requesting Ministers, Deputy Ministers and members of Parliament to make full declarations of their business interests to the House.  

The move is seen as part of an ongoing anti-corruption campaign launched by the government.  

The purpose of the disclosure is to ensure that the officials serve the public in a fair and transparent manner and to hold them accountable for the exercise of their power. 

The Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi said the government has noted media reports which highlighted the private business interests of President Jacob Zuma and members of the executive.   

Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Members of Parliament have until the middle of next month to make full declarations of their business interests to Parliament.    

South Africa has adopted the Executive Members Ethics Act and the Ministerial Handbook as key frameworks within which members of the Executive operate.  

The Act also makes provision for the Public Protector to investigate any alleged breach of the code of ethics on receipt of a complaint.
