U.S Secretary Of State Defuse Afghanistan Political Crisis An agreement brokered by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has defused the political crisis over the results of Afghanistan's election that had threatened to pull the country apart, but the situation remains volatile. Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani each claimed victory in the runoff election held on the 14th of last month after the Independent Election Commission announced preliminary results on the 7th of this month, showing Ghani had received almost a million more votes than Abdullah. Abdullah, whose tally had topped Ghani's by a similar margin in the first round of voting on 5th April, alleged that widespread fraud had distorted the runoff results. Source: BBC
