ECOWAS Summit Opens On Thursday As Police Announce Traffic Diversions The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Ben Dotse Marlor, has been explaining the reasons for the urgency within which President Mahama has been pushing the ECOWAS agenda since his election as ECOWAS Chairman. In an interview with Radio Ghana, Mr Marlor disagreed with those who claim the President should rather concentrate on fixing Ghana's economy. Meanwhile, International Relations expert Irbard Ibrahim says though ECOWAS has failed over the years to implement major protocols geared towards the transformation of the Sub-Region, Thursday’s ECOWAS Summit in Accra is timely. In an interview with Radio Ghana, Mr Irbard described the biometric ID cards for ECOWAS citizens and the revocation of the protocol on Resident Permits, which are set to feature prominently at the summit as good interventions. Irbard Ibrahim was not in support of those who claim President Mahama should concentrate more on Ghana's ailing economy rather than on the ECOWAS agenda. Following the huge traffic that characterised last month's ECOWAS Summit in Accra, the Police have diverted traffic on some major roads effective tomorrow. The Police are also advising that motorists who have no business around the Movenpic hotel, venue for the summit, desist from going there. The PRO of the Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey outlines the major roads that will be closed to traffic. The route from Movenpick Hotel to Airport Traffic Light on the Independence Avenue, Accra, will be closed to the general public effective Friday morning to evening. Traffic on the Liberation Road approaching the National Theater Traffic light, Ministries Area will be diverted onto the Barnes Road from the Accra Polytechnic to the Ministries Area. Secondly, traffic emanating from the Liberia Road will be diverted onto the Castle Road through AU Circle through Ridge Roundabout to various destinations. Traffic on the Independent Avenue between AU Circle and Novotel will be on a single carriage way in both directions. The Independence Avenue from Association Traffic Intersection to Movenpick Hotel will be converted into a one-way and segregated to allow smooth passage of VVIP convoys.
