The Security Services asked To Stop Flouting Traffic Regulations

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has appealed to members of the security services to stop flouting road traffic regulations and act as role models.

Mr Mohammed Abdul-Samad, Upper West Regional Manager of NRSC made the appeal during a stakeholders and committee members meeting in Wa on Wednesday.

“I become very sad when I see a security officer who is supposed to enforce the law riding motor bike without crash helmet or without a number plate,” he said.

He said if security personnel flout the law with impunity, enforcing it would be difficult because it would make the public uncooperative.

The Regional Road Safety Manager therefore appealed to heads of the security services to talk to their boys who were on the road to change their attitude.

Mr Abdul-Samad also expressed worry that the Upper West is only region with one traffic light and appealed for more traffic lights to be placed at vantage places to control vehicular flow.

Madam Amamata Mumuni, a member of the road safety committee appeal for identity cards for the committee members, saying it would empower them to approach people who disregard road traffic regulations including security personnel.

She said without an identity card, a road safety committee member is like any ordinary person and so cannot check people who flout road traffic regulations.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Oppong, Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of Ghana Police Service said lack of attitudinal change among Ghanaians is the biggest obstacle against road traffic regulation enforcement.

He also mentioned interference in the work of the police by authorities, relatives, friends and family members as another challenge and urged the public to allow the police to enforce the law.
