Muslims Begin Ramadan Muslims across the country have begun a 30-day period of fasting and prayers from Saturday, June 28. Other Muslims began theirs on Friday, June 27 and others, still, will begin from Sunday, June 29. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar but it is observed worldwide as a period of fasting. Sawm, zakat, sadaqah and tarawih are among special observances during this period of utmost humility and abstinence from all bad deeds. The start date for Ghanaian Muslims was announced by Alhaji Mohammed Gharzali, Chairman of the 11-member National Muslim Delegates Committee, at this year’s National Ramadan Conference held in the Western Region. It was held on the theme: “Religious Tolerance a Pre-requisite for National development.” The fasting is expected to end on July 26 but July 27 for those who begin June 29.
