Nzema Chiefs Appeal To Gov’t To Open Up Discussions on Compensation Issue on Lands @ Gas Processing Plant

The Chiefs and people of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area in the Ellembele District of the Western Region have appealed to government to act as a matter of urgency open up discussions with them for the payment of appropriate compensations on lands acquired at Atuabo and its suburbs for the construction of the Gas Processing Plant. 

They complained that the farmers especially those into coconut production have not been paid their compensation, thus creating abject poverty among them. 

The chairman of the standing committee of the Traditional Area, Nana Adu Kwaw made this known at a news conference at Atuabo. 

He said the chiefs are not against the outright compulsory acquisition of the lands by government for the project, but they need compensation for the lands acquired for it. 

Nana Adu Kwaw said the chiefs are aware of the immense contribution of the project will make to the national development including the creation of jobs for the teeming unemployment in the area, and will not do anything to sabotage it.

He explained, that the chiefs and people decided to go to court because of government's apparent failure to come to the negotiating table over the compensation issue and urged government to do the right thing for peace and tranquility to prevail between the two sides.
