13 female BECE candidates record pregnant in Nabdam District of Upper East Region
 
About 13 female candidates taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, are said to be pregnant.

The District Chief Executive, Vivian Anafo, who disclosed this to Radio Ghana, described the situation as worrying.

She said out of the 599 candidates taking part in the examination, 278 were boys while 321 were girls drawn from all basic schools across the district.

One girl who was absent delivered a baby a day before the commencement of the examination. Interestingly, two primary six pupils in the district are pregnant; a situation Mrs Anafo lamented as embarrassing.

The District Director of Education, Edward Azure, who confirmed the situation, said his office is considering a stakeholder’s forum very soon to share ideas and chart the way forward in dealing with the issue of teenage pregnancy among students.

He urged parents to be responsible by taking interest in their wards education.
