2014 BECE underway nationwide 

The 2014 Basic Education Certificate Examination has begun nationwide on Monday with 422, 946 candidates expected to write the examination. 

Of the number, 223,765 are male while 199,181 are female. 

The candidates will be using 1,431 centres nationwide. Meanwhile a statement from the Agona West Municipal Director of Education, Francis Obeng Ampadu has warned the candidates to desist from examination malpractices to avoid cancellation of results as well as taking foreign materials to the centres.
 

 
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, in the company of the Tema Metro Director of Education, Kwesi Hutchful, and the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, have visited some examination centres in the Tema Metropolis and its environs to obtain firsthand information on the examination. 

Some of the Centres visited include the Tema Secondary, St Peter’s Catholic and Ashaiman Secondary Schools. 

Professor Opoku Agyeman urged the candidates to write with confidence and courage to enable them to pass well. 

She however cautioned them against all forms of examination malpractices in order not to give the Exams Council cause to cancel their papers. 

The Tema Director of Education, Kwesi Hutchful warned teachers and parents, who accompany candidates to distance themselves from the examination centers since that is against the examination rules. 

He said the Directorate has put in place measures to ensure that candidates write the exams in a conducive environment. 

Meanwhile, 6,751 candidates are writing the BECE in the Tema Metropolis at 24 Centres. 

They comprise 3,542 girls and 3,209 boys. 147 schools made up of 48 public and 99 private schools are participating. There are also 238 Invigilators, 24 supervisors and 22 Assistant supervisors. 

Reports from Tamale say the BECE has started smoothly in all the centres in the Northern region with a total of 34, 524 candidates taking part in the exams. 

Out of these, 20, 016 are boys, whilst 14,508 are females. 

In the Krachi District, the BECE is said to have started on time and is progressing smoothly. The Volta Regional Minister, Helen Ntoso led a team of educationists and journalists to visit some of the examination centres. 


In a related development, Obuasi Municipality has for some time emerged national best in BECE. The GES Director there, Nana Kofi Baffour Awuah says Obuasi is determined to maintain and perfect its position. 

Pupils writing this year's BECE seem enthusiastic and poised. A visit by Radio Ghana to some centres in Accra showed a serene atmosphere. Officers on duty were satisfied with the process so far and the composure of the candidates.
