Poor City Planning Leads To Disasters

The President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, Magnus Quarshie says Ghana does not factor disaster planning in drawing up city plans in most parts of the country.

 He said advanced countries like the Netherlands have allocated lands specially meant to cater for victims of natural disasters such as floods.

 Mr. Quarshie was speaking on GTV's Current Affairs Programme, "Talking Point" last night on the issue of flooding in the capital. 

He said the responsibility of planning a city is not only for engineers but the entire public. 

For her part, the Director of Hydro Meteorological Disaster, NADMO , Sarah Adinku said NADMO does not have the mandate to carry out demolition exercises but rather, their work is only to advise city planners and MMDAs on how to manage disasters.
