World AIDS Day to be marked in Wa today 

The Ghana AIDS Commission will host Wa, the Upper West regional capital to host this year's World AIDS Day. 

The day, observed on first December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness on AIDS caused by the spread of HIV infection. 

This year’s national HIV durbar will however be held today, December 2nd as the day was a Sunday. 

A statement issued by the Director General of the Commission, Dr Angela El-Adas, said the latest statistics suggest that out of the almost 236,000 people living with HIV, about 28,000 are children from zero to 14 years. 

It is estimated that 121,000 people living with HIV currently need anti-retroviral treatment, even though 76,000 are being given medical care, at least 7,000 more will be covered before the end of the year. 

Meanwhile, all is set for the celebration of World AIDs Day in Ghana in Wa in the Upper West Regional capital. 

The event which is on the theme: “Getting to Zero” is aimed at bringing to the attention of people the dangers involved in contracting HIV, and measures to be put in place to prevent infection, as well as bring it under control. 

Radio Ghana’s correspondent reports that apart from the main celebration which takes off today, the Ghana AIDS Commission has rolled out a number of activities to herald the occasion.
