Helping Mali resolve crisis is high priority-Feltman


United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs,Jeffrey Feltman says, ensuring that the UN does its utmost to help Mali resolve the complex crisis it faces today is one of the highest priorities for the Secretary-General.

Speaking to UN Security Council on Wednesday, Mr. Feltman said important work is already underway in Mali, but the most significant development in the political process remains the adoption of a Roadmap for the Transition.

Strengthening the capacity and legitimacy of the State and the political system at all levels, he said, remains a key priority for the UN and for political leaders in Mali.

”The coup d'état of 22 March 2012 and the crisis in northern Mali are, in large measure, manifestations of a crisis of governance that encompasses endemic corruption, weak State capacity to provide basic services and the low level of legitimacy of State institutions and the political system. ”
Mr. Feltman said he hopes that a broad and inclusive Malian-led political process can begin to address the long-term challenges that must be overcome for Mali to achieve long-term political stability and economic prosperit.
