4th April, 2013 The Daily Graphic calls on government to initiate a public debate on the number of ministers that is ideal for effective governance. According to the paper, since the advent of the Fourth Republic, Presidents have come under a barrage of criticism for running very big bureaucracies that undermine the efficiency of government machinery. The Graphic says every sector of the Ghanaian economy requires special attention, but the country does not have the luxury of appointing ministers to be responsible for every sphere of national endeavour. The paper thinks when people reckon that the government is living the call to sacrifice, they will accept austerity measures in good faith. The Ghanaian Times lauds President John Dramani Mahama for filing his tax returns for the year 2012 with the Ghana Revenue Authority. According to the paper, the country's laws exempt the President from the payment of tax but President Mahama felt the need to pay tax on the extra income he earns from other sources. The Times says this should be a wake-up call to all Ghanaians eligible to pay taxes, to do so to advance the cause of progress. The paper says the country is in dire need of funds to provide the basic necessities of life for the people and therefore calls on all who earn income to emulate the President. The Today newspaper calls for stiffer punishment for those responsible for the expired chemicals used for the treatment of water by the Ghana Water Company. The paper also advocates announcing the punishment in the media. It decries similar reports that have been swept under the carpet for lack of political will to implement them. According to the Paper, the scope of the Minister's investigation was too narrow and must be widened. GBC
