President Mahama charges city authorities and Samsun to practicalise details of various MOU's signed Sanitation and related issues are challenges facing the Accra Metropolis and other Regional capitals. It is hoped that these challenges will soon become a thing of the past with sister-city partnership between Accra and Samsun Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey. A number of memoranda of understanding have been signed with Istanbul and Samsun cities to build working relationships in various fields particularly in solving issues of sanitation. The Mayor of Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, Yusuf Yilmaz, threw light on this when he called on President John Mahama at Flagstaff House in Accra. The Mayor of Samsun a nine-member Turkish delegation, expressed his city's commitment to building ties with the city of Accra and further exploring other areas of business. He praised Ghana's fast improving business environment. Briefing President Mahama, Accra Mayor Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who accompanied the team, recounted an earlier visit by a delegation he led to Samsun to broker sister-city relations to consider issues regarding sanitation, housing, roads and highways. This, he noted, led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation between Accra and Samsun. The co-operation will involve the construction of four transfer stations, ordering of 24 waste wheelers and 24 refuse trucks, he said. President Mahama expressed the country's deepest interest in providing facilities for housing and road infrastructure as well as waste management. “We have all followed Turkey’s progress and we are impressed at the way you have built your economy to become one of the significant players in world trading in such a short time,” he said. “Ghana is anxious as one of the emerging countries in Africa economies to partner with Turkey so that we can take some of your experiences and be able to build new emerging economies in Africa,” President Mahama added. He said with the credit line ties Turkey’s Exxon Bank has with Ghana, project implementation will be easy in the new deal. The President charged the AMA Chief Executive, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye and the Mayor of Samsun, Yusuf Yilmaz to go beyond talking to practicalising the reason for the partnership. GBC
